About Heath

Heath Mello was elected to represent the Fifth District in the Nebraska Legislature on November 4th, 2008.

As a State Senator, Mello is a member of the Appropriations Committee, the Nebraska Retirement Systems Committee, the Legislative Strategic Planning Committee, and the Homeland Security Policy Group.

Senator Mello also serves a member on the Legislature's Healthcare Reform Task Force and the Budget Reform Task Force.

Senator Mello is a member of the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators and sits on the Council for State Governments-Midwest Legislative Conference, Energy Committee and Economic Development Committee. He also sit on both the National Conference of State Legislatures Budget and Revenue Committee as well as the Labor and Economic Development.

Prior to his election, Mello served as a Senior Aide to U.S. Senator Ben Nelson. As an aide to Senator Nelson, Heath worked to meet the needs of Nebraska’s communities, businesses and non-profit organizations.

Senator Mello is a member of South Omaha Development Project, South Omaha Neighborhood Alliance, South Omaha Business Association, Q Merchants, South Omaha Optimists, Green Omaha Coalition, Knights of Columbus, Bellevue Community Police Foundation Board of Directors, One World Health Center Board of Directors, and St. Thomas More Parish.

Mello is graduate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Political Science degree.
